“Did the roses really bloom here?” a young boy asked, tugging at his mother’s hand as they stood at the entrance of the Sentier des Rosiers. The Sentier des Rosiers. A street steeped in history, nestled in the heart of Paris’s Jewish Quarter, Le Marais. The street’s name, meaning “path of rosebushes,” hinted at a more idyllic past. In the late 12th century, rosebushes adorned the ramparts of King Philip-Augustus. These very walls once stood where the Sentier des Rosiers now bustles with life. Traces of this medieval past still linger. At number 10, a beautifully restored tower and a segment of the old rampart stand proudly in the Jardin Rosiers-Joseph Migneret. This quiet garden offers a moment of respite from the lively street, a reminder of the layers of history beneath your feet. In the 13th century, another street nearby, Rue Ferdinand Duval, was known as the Rue des Juifs. It signifies a long-standing Jewish presence in the area, dating back centuries before the large influx of Ashkenazi Jews between 1881 and 1914. The Sentier des Rosiers, however, tells a more recent story of this community. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw Jewish families escaping persecution in Eastern Europe, finding refuge in this Parisian quarter, known as the “Pletzl” in Yiddish. Fast forward to the 1980s, and the Sentier des Rosiers was a vibrant hub of Jewish life. Kosher butchers, bakeries, and Judaica shops lined the street, a testament to a resilient community. Tragically, the street also bears witness to a darker moment. In 1982, the Goldenberg restaurant at number 7 was the target of a horrific anti-Semitic attack, a chilling reminder of the prejudice this community has endured. Now, the Sentier des Rosiers is in constant flux. Trendy boutiques replace traditional shops. The aroma of falafel from L’As du Falafel and Falafel King competes with the scent of designer leather from nearby boutiques. The street has seen a shift, a blending of old and new, a story still unfolding on the “path of rosebushes”.
