For centuries Pura Erjeruk has been a spiritual anchor. Its history stretches back possibly to the 10th century during the reign of Sri Wira Dalem Kesari Warmadewa. Legend connects the temple’s creation to this powerful king. He is said to have built Pura Erjeruk along with other significant temples like Pura Penataran Agung.
Pura Erjeruk’s importance grew further. The revered Empu Kuturan in the 11th century and Dang Hyang Nirartha in the 15th or 16th century are also linked to the temple. These spiritual leaders left their mark. Their influence shaped Pura Erjeruk’s character. It’s considered a Pura Dang Kahyangan a temple with close ties to these influential figures.
Notice the statues of a priest and his wife. They embody the Tri Kona philosophy. This concept teaches balance. It encourages creation protection and the ending of what is no longer useful. This wisdom guides the community. It promotes a harmonious and thoughtful way of life.

The temple’s design is significant. It’s structured in three courtyards or mandalas. Each courtyard has its own sacredness. The middle courtyard features a Gedong Palinggih a shrine linked to the powerful Dalem Waturenggong. The inner courtyard boasts over 26 sacred structures.
Pura Erjeruk hosts many ceremonies. Nyenuk is a large procession to Pura Desa Sukawati. It shows gratitude for the temple’s blessings. Nanggluk Merana in the sixth month of the Balinese calendar asks for protection and fertility. Tawur Agung a major cleansing ceremony precedes significant holidays.
