Puri Ageng Pemayun Kesiman is more than a royal residence. It holds a significant place in Denpasar’s history. Its very existence is intertwined with the story of Kyai Agung Ngurah Pemayun. He was the son of Kyai Anglurah Pemecutan Sakti the third ruler of Puri Agung Pemecutan. His mother a princess from Puri Agung Gelogor further connected this puri to Bali’s powerful lineage.
Kyai Agung Ngurah Pemayun was tasked with securing the eastern part of the kingdom. This included the area of Sumerta and beyond. His duty was challenging. He faced conflict with Dalem Benculuk Tegeh Kuri the ruler of Tonja and Sumerta. Peace talks failed leading to a decisive battle. Kyai Agung Ngurah Pemayun’s forces prevailed. This victory dramatically altered the social hierarchy of the region.
To strengthen his control over the east Kyai Agung Ngurah Pemayun built Puri Ageng Pemayun Kesiman. It initially stood south of Pura Luhur Dalem Mutering Jagat Kesiman. However frequent outbreaks of disease prompted a relocation. With the help of Pekak Poleng a respected figure the puri moved to its present location west of Pura Pengrebongan.
Puri Ageng Pemayun Kesiman boasts impressive historical artifacts. One notable item is the heirloom kris I Cekle. It’s a significant relic gifted by Prabu Pucangan to Kyai Ketut Bendesa. It rewarded the accomplishment of cutting down a huge banyan tree. This remarkable kris symbolizes the puri’s enduring legacy.
Even today Puri Ageng Pemayun Kesiman remains a vital cultural and historical site in Denpasar. It showcases Bali’s enduring traditions and struggles.
