Stepping inside the Penang Christian Centre, imagine its humble beginnings. In 1981, a small group of just 15 believers gathered for their first service. They met not in a grand building like this, but in the hall of the Penang Chinese Girls’ School. The Penang Christian Centre, or PCC, as it’s often called, has come a long way since then. Officially recognized as a Home Mission Church by the Assemblies of God, Malaysia in 1982, PCC began its journey. Services were held in various locations, including the Rasa Sayang Hotel and Dewan Sri Pinang. The church expanded its reach in 1987, introducing a Hokkien worship service and establishing a youth ministry for secondary school students. Just a few years later, in 1989, PCC acquired the 6th floor of Canton Square. The first service in their new space was held the following year, marking a significant milestone in PCC’s growth. PCC celebrated its 10th anniversary in grand style at the Shangri-La hotel, with Penang’s then-Chief Minister Koh Tsu Koon in attendance. The church continued to grow, planting seeds of faith in other communities. The Ipoh Christian Centre was established two years after the anniversary celebration. Then came the Sungei Petani Christian Centre (SPCC) in 1996. A third outreach, Harvest Christian Centre, was founded in 1997 and currently occupies the former PCC premises at Canton Square. The land where the current Penang Christian Centre community center stands was purchased in 2000. Construction began the following year, finally resulting in the building you see before you today on Khaw Sim Bee Road.
