The China Pavilion a spectacular structure attracted millions of visitors. This popularity led to a decision. The Pavilion would become the new home of the Shanghai Art Museum. It would be renamed the China Art Museum. This happened in 2012.
The new China Art Museum is vast. It spans 64000 square meters. This is over ten times larger than its previous home. The building is architecturally stunning. It resembles an ancient crown. It is known as the Crown of the East. Its design is inspired by traditional Chinese architecture. Dou gong brackets and the ancient bronze cauldron called ding are elements of this design. The cost was significant an estimated 220 million US dollars.
Inside the China Art Museum we find a remarkable collection. About 14000 artworks are housed within its walls. These are primarily pieces of modern Chinese art. A permanent exhibition called The Bright Moon Rises from the Sea is particularly noteworthy. It chronicles the development of modern and contemporary Chinese art. This exhibition spans three periods. These are the Qing Dynasty the Republic of China and the People’s Republic of China. It covers over 6000 works of art. It is curated by Lu Fusheng a prominent figure in the art world.
Another permanent exhibit showcases famous modern Chinese artists. He Tianjian Xie Zhiliu and Cheng Shifa of the Shanghai School are featured. Lin Fengmian Guan Liang and Wu Guanzhong are also presented. These artists blended Chinese and Western styles. Hua Tianyou a founder of modern Chinese sculpture is also included.
The museum also houses artwork from a government project. This project encouraged art featuring Shanghai’s history and culture. The themes include people historical events and folk customs. The project lasted three years. It concluded in 2013. The museum also regularly holds special exhibitions. In its first year alone more than a dozen special exhibitions were held.
