Hidden in the 19th arrondissement lies the Chemin des Carrières. Its name whispers of a past far removed from the Parisian bustle we see today. This unassuming street once led to vast open-air quarries known as the “Carrières d’Amérique”. These weren’t just any quarries. They yielded plaster a crucial building material for centuries.

Imagine the scene in the 1800s. Hundreds of workers toiled in these quarries. They extracted plaster from deep within the earth. The quarries were enormous a maze of tunnels and chambers. The sheer scale was breathtaking. These weren’t just places of labor however. They became havens for outlaws hiding in the shadows of Parisian society.

The Chemin des Carrières’ history stretches back further than the quarries themselves. Early maps from 1812 already show a “chemin des Carrières”. By 1844 it was called the “chemin de l’Amérique”. It formed a boundary with the commune of Belleville. The western part disappeared during urban development in the 1860s. This transformation changed the landscape forever. It erased part of the Chemin des Carrières’ ancient route.

The street became officially part of Paris’s road system sometime after 1844. The exact date remains elusive. Its official integration signifies a shift. A shift from a rural path to a city street.

Today the quarries themselves are largely gone. But the Chemin des Carrières still stands. It silently bears witness to a significant chapter in Paris’s history. The street continues its journey. It connects the past to the present a tangible link to a world of hidden tunnels and forgotten outlaws. The legacy of the “Carrières d’Amérique” lives on. It whispers its secrets through the very name of this street. The Chemin des Carrières remains a hidden gem. It awaits those curious enough to uncover its rich history.
