This bay almost completely dries at low tide. Imagine vast mudflats stretching out before you. Wading birds feast on sea snails cockles crabs and worms. As the tide returns juvenile flounder and mullet arrive feeding on the plentiful invertebrates. The name Te Matuku itself means Australasian bittern. This rare bird can sometimes be spotted in the nearby wetlands.
Look closely at the intertidal flats. Notice the spiny tubeworm colonies. These remarkable creatures create intricate structures. They were once abundant in the inner Waitemata Harbour. Now they are a rare sight a testament to the unique ecosystem of Te Matuku Bay.

Strong tidal currents create vibrant underwater habitats. Sponges anemones soft corals juvenile snapper and trevally thrive here.
Te Matuku Bay also holds the remnants of Waiheke Island’s earliest European settlement. The sites of the first school and a pioneer cemetery remain quiet reminders of the past.
