High above us looms a giant. It’s a structure that tirelessly works to keep Singapore clean. This is the Tuas South Incineration Plant.

The Tuas South Incineration Plant stands as Singapore’s largest waste incineration facility. It plays a vital role in the nation’s waste management. Commissioned in June 2000, it’s been operating for over two decades.

Tuas South Incineration Plant handles an impressive 3,000 tonnes of garbage every day. This incineration process reduces waste volume by about 90%. This significantly reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. The plant occupies 10.5 hectares of reclaimed land. It demonstrates Singapore’s commitment to innovative waste management.

The construction of the Tuas South Incineration Plant cost S$890 million. This reflects the scale and advanced technology used here. The plant doesn’t just burn waste. It also generates 80 MW of electricity.

The Tuas South Incineration Plant uses state-of-the-art technology. The processes are highly automated. They are controlled via a digital control system. This ensures high efficiency and reliability.

Let’s delve into some of the main plant equipment. The refuse handling involves eight weighbridges. Each has a 50-tonne capacity. There are 24 refuse discharge bays. There are two refuse screening bays. A hydraulic polyp grab serves them. Four bulky waste rotary shears process 25 tonnes per hour. There are two bulky waste cranes and four refuse cranes. Each has a 10m3 capacity. Two separate refuse storage bunkers and one bulky waste storage pit complete the system.

Six stoker furnace units with integral boilers incinerate refuse. The flue gas handling uses six two-zone electrostatic precipitators. Six ten-compartment catalytic bag filters each comprise 2,240 fabric bags. Two concrete chimneys of 150m height expel the processed gasses. They have ceramic brick inner linings. Two lime silos and two reaction product silos are also present.

The ash handling system features two pusher-type hydraulic slag extractors. Vibrating conveyors also play a role. Each incinerator unit has two magnetic separators. These recover scrap metal. Three overhead wire rope operated cranes load ash and scrap. Each has a 3.5 m3 capacity.

All incinerable refuse is processed at incineration plants. Non-incinerable refuse and ash go to Semakau Landfill. This approach conserves scarce land. Tuas South Incineration Plant helps to achieve a clean living environment.

Consider the steam generation. Each boiler generates 105 tonnes per hour. The steam pressure is 35 barG at 370 degrees Celsius. The condensing pressure is 0.17 barA. The power generation capacity is 80 MW. The generator voltage is 10.5kV.

The Tuas South Incineration Plant, with its advanced technology and impressive capacity, stands as a testament to Singapore’s dedication to sustainable waste management and environmental responsibility. It is a crucial piece in Singapore’s plan. It helps maintain a clean and green city for all.
