Did you know that the Bischöfliches Willigis-Gymnasium, initially named St. Marienschule, started with just 43 students in 1852? It’s quite a journey from those humble beginnings to the vibrant school community we see today. Let’s step back in time and explore the story of this venerable institution.

The Bischöfliches Willigis-Gymnasium and Willigis-Realschule stand here in Mainz. They have a rich history rooted in faith and education. Bishop Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler founded the school. He named it St. Marienschule. This happened on February 2, 1852. Ketteler envisioned a model school accessible to all.

The Marianists took charge of instruction. However, the Kulturkampf in 1874 brought challenges. The order could not accept new members. This hampered their work. Local clergy and lay teachers helped bridge the gap. Bishop Paul Leopold Haffner insisted on keeping the school open.

In 1901, a new expansion designed by Frankfurt architect Hans Rummel was inaugurated. This was a grand event. World War I saw the school transform into a military hospital. Classes moved to St. Stephan’s sacristy, the seminary, and the Bishop’s office.

Johannes Gärtner, the third headmaster, faced expulsion by the French in 1923. The reasons remain unknown. Heinrich Wettig, later a cathedral prebendary, became headmaster. He led until the Nazis closed the school in 1938. Bishop Albert Stohr announced the closure of all confessional schools in the diocese.

The school reopened in 1955. Slowly, it rebuilt. In 1964, it was renamed Willigis-Gymnasium. The Willigis-Realschule followed in 1972. Rising student numbers led to expansion and renovation. This was completed in 1985. A new cafeteria was added in 2011.

The Bischöfliches Willigis-Gymnasium emphasizes Christian values. Religious education and regular services are integral. Musical subjects also hold importance. Since 2008, the school participated in a G8 pilot program. This aimed for graduation after 12 years. In 2019, a gradual return to the G9 system began with grade 6.

Many notable figures attended the Willigis-Gymnasium. Norbert Himmler, director of ZDF, is an alumnus. Heinz Schenk, a famous entertainer, also studied here. The school has shaped countless lives. It has contributed significantly to Mainz.

The Bischöfliches Willigis-Gymnasium continues to evolve. It embraces modern educational approaches. These include digital learning and experiential education. The school maintains its commitment to Christian values. It fosters a supportive community. The school’s motto is to nurture well-rounded individuals. These are prepared to meet the challenges of the future. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. The Bischöfliches Willigis-Gymnasium also proves the importance of education in shaping lives.
