Good Shepherd and Epiphany Parish, a name echoing the unification of two congregations. This very church, the Epiphany Roman Catholic Church, has borne witness to the ebb and flow of Chicago’s history. Built in 1885, it wasn’t always under the Catholic banner. The Episcopal Diocese originally commissioned this architectural marvel, a stunning example of Richardsonian Romanesque Revival. The red sandstone, hewn from the depths of Lake Superior, speaks to a time before skyscrapers pierced the Chicago sky. The Epiphany Roman Catholic Church has known moments of both solemnity and sorrow. In 1893, the grief-stricken city gathered here for the funeral of assassinated Mayor Carter Harrison Sr. Years later, in 1969, the church bore witness to the mourning of another tragedy, hosting the memorial service for Black Panther leader Fred Hampton. Now, under the banner of Good Shepherd and Epiphany Parish, this house of worship stands as a testament to the power of faith and resilience. It serves as a reminder that even as the city around it changes, some things endure, offering solace and community in the heart of Chicago.
