Große Sporthalle

“A colossal arena rising from the heart of Mainz.” That’s the Große Sporthalle. It stands as a testament to the city’s passion for sports. The Große Sporthalle, or “Great Sports Hall,” isn’t just a building. It’s a dream, a long-held aspiration of Mainz. For 17 years, the Sportbund Rheinhessen championed the idea of a Bundesliga-ready venue. This hall embodies that vision. The current Große Sporthalle, located in Mainz-Mombach on Obere-Kreuzstraße 9-13, is a two-field hall with a PVC floor. It’s 27m x 45m, covering 1215 square meters. It has four changing rooms. However, it is not accessible for people with disabilities. This older hall, while serving the community, shows its age with cracks in the foundation. Its eventual closure is inevitable. This spurred the city to envision a grander replacement. The new Große Sporthalle is planned for the same Mombach location, at Dalheimer Weg 2. It will replace the older “Sporthalle am Großen Sand.” This new arena is designed to be a modern, three-field marvel. It will accommodate approximately 2,500 spectators. It will cater to both school and club sports, hosting everything from local matches to national and even international competitions. Imagine the roar of the crowd as teams clash on the court. Picture the electrifying atmosphere of a Bundesliga game. This is what the Große Sporthalle promises to bring to Mainz. The new hall is more than just a sports venue. It will have six separable fields, retractable stands, catering areas, VIP rooms, and even spaces for doping tests. The city plans for the municipal sports department to manage it. They anticipate funding from school usage and naming rights. The projected cost is substantial, estimated at 66 million euros. This ambitious project has faced financial hurdles, leading to a year’s delay. Despite this, the city remains committed. The planning process is ongoing, with a dedicated advisory board overseeing it. This board includes members from local politics, sports associations, and club representatives. This ensures community involvement and reflects the importance of the project to Mainz. The Große Sporthalle represents more than just bricks and mortar. It represents the city’s dedication to sports, community, and the future.
