Did Kardos Tibor ever imagine a plaque commemorating his life at 3 Stollár Street? Here at the Kardos Tibor Plaque, we unravel the story of this remarkable man. The plaque, an elegant marble testament, proclaims “IN THIS HOUSE LIVED KARDOS TIBOR (1908-1973), RESEARCHER OF THE HUNGARIAN AND EUROPEAN RENAISSANCE.” Kardos Tibor, born in Budapest in 1908, dedicated his life to the exploration of the Renaissance. He was a scholar, philologist, Italianist, translator, and a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. His work centered on Hungarian humanist culture and Renaissance literature. He meticulously studied the life and works of Janus Pannonius. He delved into the Renaissance courts of the Anjou kings, Matthias I, and the Jagiellonian dynasty. Kardos Tibor’s translations brought humanist literary and philosophical works to a Hungarian audience. He translated works by prominent figures like Thomas More, Leonardo da Vinci, Petrarch, and Erasmus of Rotterdam. He even spearheaded the Hungarian publication of Boccaccio’s Decameron and Dante’s works. From 1950 until his death in 1973, he led the Department of Italian Language and Literature at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. He received the Kossuth Prize in 1956, a testament to his significant contributions. The Kardos Tibor Plaque isn’t just a piece of marble. It’s a window into the life of a man who illuminated the Renaissance for Hungary. His legacy resonates within these very walls, reminding us of the enduring power of scholarship and the beauty of the Renaissance.
