Have you ever heard of a park that was once a school? Comal Pocket Park is a neighborhood park with a fascinating past. It started out as Comal School which opened its doors in 1925. The park used to be one of the two segregated public schools for Mexican scholastics at the time. After years of serving the community as a school, in 1940, the school board gave the building to the National Youth Administration to become a community center. But the center was short-lived. The National Youth Administration shifted its funding toward defense projects in 1942 in response to the needs of World War II. After several attempts, the City took over the Center in 1946 and renovated it. The community continued to organize and lobby to get funds to build a new Center. It was finally built in 1955. The old Center was torn down and the park was dedicated as a small park. The park was a favorite spot for basketball games and enjoyment of the shady play area. The vibrant colorful archway was a community project funded by the Parks Foundation in 2002. Neighbors of all ages contributed to the construction process. Comal Pocket Park is a reminder of the stories and changes that a city goes through. It’s a small park with lasting stories.
