Hidden amongst Copenhagen’s vibrant neighborhoods lies Sankt Petersborg Plads a square with a story to tell. This isn’t just any square. It’s a testament to Copenhagen’s urban transformation. Sankt Petersborg Plads located in Nordhavn sits nestled between Goteborg Plads Hamborg Plads and Murmanskgade forming a unique triangular shape.
Before 2014 this area was part of Copenhagen’s Free Port. Access was restricted. Industrial buildings stood where now you see modern architecture. The transformation began with the area’s designation as a new residential and commercial district. New streets and squares were planned including Sankt Petersborg Plads. Following a theme of international port cities the name Sankt Petersborg Plads was officially approved in January 2014.
The square’s development mirrored the surrounding construction. On the south side the Harbour Park apartment complex rose. Designed by Danielsen Architecture it boasts brickwork in warm brown and red hues. A shared garden provides a tranquil retreat for residents. To the north the Lders parking garage stands a vibrant addition to the landscape. JAJA Architects designed this building with illustrations of port life and abundant greenery. It houses around 500 cars a Netto supermarket and a recycling center. Its roof is truly remarkable. The Konditaget Lders a 2400 square meter rooftop park offers recreation and stunning views.
The western side of Sankt Petersborg Plads was originally planned for a commercial building including a cinema. This section initially remained undeveloped acting as a construction zone. The square’s full completion was anticipated only around 2020. The vision for Sankt Petersborg Plads is a green oasis with a variety of trees shrubs and perennials. Comfortable seating areas and play areas will enhance its appeal.
Today Sankt Petersborg Plads stands as a symbol of Copenhagen’s dynamic evolution. It showcases a perfect blend of modern architecture green spaces and community amenities. It’s a reminder that even the newest parts of a city bear witness to history. This is more than just a square. It’s a living breathing story of urban renewal. So take a moment soak in the atmosphere.
