Lost amidst the vibrant energy of Rio de Janeiro lies Pedra do Sal. It is a place resonating with history and cultural significance. Are you ready to explore this historical and religious site?

Pedra do Sal translates to “Rock of Salt.” It is nestled in the Saude neighborhood. This area is close to Rio’s central business district. Historically, it’s part of “Little Africa.” This area stretches from Praça Mauá to Cidade Nova.

This rock was once a quilombo village. Quilombos were settlements for escaped slaves. Today, the Community Descendents of the Quilombos of Pedra do Sal still lives here. The Institute for State Cultural Heritage recognized it in 1984.

In the 19th century, enslaved people cut stones from Pedra do Sal. They used these stones to build roads and the Port of Rio de Janeiro. Being close to the sea, it served as a point for salt arrival and departure. This salt was crucial for leather manufacturing and meat preservation.

Around 1608, migrants from Bahia settled in Saude. Prices were low. The area was near the port. Men found work on cargo ships. The first large docks and warehouses of Rio de Janeiro were built then. Streets extended to Pedra da Prainha. This was later known as Pedra do Sal. A large slave market operated here.

By 1817, Pedra do Sal became a central meeting place. It was a cultural reference for the Black population. The Bahian influence permeated Carioca life. City leaders even visited Candomblé ceremonies and festivals. This area fostered social unity.

Key figures like Aunt Ciata shaped Pedra do Sal’s identity. Aunt Ciata, born Hilária Batista de Almeida, was a famous Mãe-de-Santo. She was central to early samba and carnival groups. Born in Bahia, she arrived in Rio at 22. She sold sweets in traditional Bahian dress.

Aunt Ciata helped integrate African traditions into the city. She expanded the cultural life. She organized ranchos in Saude. These groups transformed early Carnaval parades.

Today, Pedra do Sal pulsates with samba music. Every Monday and Friday night, the Roda de Pedra group performs. The area is filled with colorful houses. It attracts tourists and locals.

On December 2nd, the International Day of Samba, the “quilombo” celebrates the washing of the stone. Candomblé groups and the Afoxé Filhos de Gandhi also participate.

Imagine the echoes of samba rhythms. Picture the colorful dresses and the taste of Bahian snacks. Feel the history beneath your feet. Pedra do Sal isn’t just a rock. It’s a living testament to Rio’s African heritage.
