Hadley Green. A place where whispers of history mingle with the rustling leaves. Hadley Green is a 25-acre oasis. It holds the title of the oldest public open space in the London Borough of Barnet. Imagine villagers’ animals grazing peacefully across this land. This tradition continued for centuries, right up until the 20th century. In 1818, Hadley Green was officially designated as public open space. This followed an unsuccessful attempt at enclosure by the lord of the manor. Before the construction of Barnet Road in 1828, the road bisecting Hadley Green served as the sole route north from Barnet. This very ground beneath your feet is steeped in history. It was the site of a pivotal battle in the Wars of the Roses: the Battle of Barnet in 1471. Hadley Green holds more recent historical tales too. The explorer David Livingstone briefly resided in Livingstone Cottage on his return to England in 1857. It was here that he penned his famous work, “Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa”. In the late 19th century, film pioneer Birt Acres lived at what is now Manor Cottage. One of his earliest films, shot in 1895, captures a hay cart traversing Hadley Green. And until 1935, a whipping post, cucking stool, and stocks stood on the green. They met their end, not through deliberate removal, but by accidentally burning down during a celebratory bonfire for King George V’s jubilee. As you stroll across Hadley Green today, remember the layers of history beneath your feet. From ancient battles to pioneering filmmakers, Hadley Green holds a multitude of stories. It is a testament to the enduring power of public spaces.
