Ahead lies a temple complex of halls and pagodas. This is Chuson-ji Temple. It sits atop Mount Kanzan in northern Japan. Chuson-ji is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011. It offers a tranquil experience with its pebbled paths.
Chuson-ji Temple was founded in 850 by the Buddhist monk Ennin. Ennin studied Buddhism throughout Japan. He documented his travels in a famous travelogue.
In the 12th century Lord Kiyohara of the Fujiwara clan expanded Chuson-ji. He wished to honor those lost in previous wars. At its peak Chuson-ji included more than 40 halls and pagodas. Over 300 monks resided here.
Political strife caused the temple complex to decline. A massive fire destroyed much of Chuson-ji in the 1300s. Only two structures survived the Konjikido Temple and a storehouse for religious sutras.
The Konjikido Hall completed in 1124 is Chuson-ji’s highlight. The small building is covered in gold leaf. Many compare it to Kyoto’s Golden Pavilion. Konjikido showcases art and culture from its construction period. This includes lacquer work metalwork and pearl inlays. Inside Konjikido are the mummified remains of Fujiwara clan leaders. Lord Kiyohira’s body rests under the central altar. His son Motohira is buried below the northwest altar. Photography inside is prohibited.
Originally built outdoors Konjikido was later enclosed for protection. A concrete building with glass surrounds it today. The Sankozo Museum opened in 2000. It preserves Chuson-ji’s historic treasures. Over 3000 cultural properties and national treasures are housed here. These include Buddhist statues scriptures and relics.
Visitors approach Chuson-ji via Tsukimi-zaka. This moon-viewing hill is lined with trees. They were planted during the Tokugawa period.
The Hondō Main Hall is where many services happen. It was rebuilt in 1909. The main image is Shaka Nyorai the Historical Buddha. Eternal lights burn on either side.
