Amidst the bustling energy of Denpasar, a hidden gem awaits: Tegal Kertha. This unassuming village, nestled within the Denpasar Barat district, holds a story more intriguing than its quiet demeanor suggests. Tegal Kertha wasn’t always a village. It began as a housing project, “Perumnas Monang Maning,” a solution to the frequent flooding that plagued the unproductive agricultural lands. In 1982, the Badung Regency government, in collaboration with Perumnas and PT. Karya Makmur, transformed this flood-prone area into a haven for low and middle-income families. Picture this: rows of newly built homes, types D.15, D.21, and D.25, spread across ten blocks, rising from land once deemed unusable. The first residents began moving into Tegal Kertha in 1983, their lives intertwined with the history of this burgeoning community. Initially, Tegal Kertha remained under the administrative jurisdiction of Pemecutan Village. As the population grew, the need for separate governance became evident. The area was then divided into two prospective villages: Tegal Kertha and Tegal Harum. Made Tama, formerly the Head of Governance at the Mengwi District Office, stepped in as the interim village head. Five distinct neighborhoods, or *dusuns*, formed the heart of Tegal Kertha: Tegal Wangi, Bhuana Asri, Muliawan, Bhuana Sari, and Panca Kertha. The journey from housing project to village culminated in 1989. A decree from the Governor of Bali, endorsed by the Minister of Home Affairs, officially recognized Tegal Kertha as a definitive village. Drs. Made Subawa, a staff member of the West Denpasar District Office, took the reins as interim village head. He later oversaw the first direct election of a village head in 1991, which resulted in I Made Duglut, a member of Brimob, leading Tegal Kertha. The growth of Denpasar continued, leading to further expansion of Tegal Kertha. By 2001, three new *dusuns* joined the existing five: Mertha Gangga, Manut Negara, and Graha Santi, bringing the total to eight. Tegal Kertha, born from the need for secure housing, blossomed into a vibrant community, a testament to the resilience and spirit of its people. From flooded fields to a thriving village, Tegal Kertha’s story is a reminder that even from challenging beginnings, something beautiful can emerge.
