Did you know that Spirit of Hope United Methodist Church in Golden Valley boasts a history stretching back to 1862? That’s right during the American Civil War this congregation took root. Imagine a tiny white church on Golden Valley Road a stark contrast to the vibrant community hub it is today. This wasn’t just any church. It was the beginning of Golden Valley’s longest-standing congregation.

Spirit of Hope United Methodist Church wasn’t always located where it stands today on Highway 55 and Harold Avenue. In the 1960s the original building was sold. The Christian Science Society bought the little white church. Spirit of Hope then moved to its current location. The old church building became a wedding destination a testament to its enduring charm. But the spirit of Hope lived on. It continued its important role in the community.

It’s fascinating to think that the Golden Valley Historical Society now occupies the site of the original Spirit of Hope United Methodist Church building. A generous donation made this possible. Long-time resident Shirley Schultz donated $86000 in 1997. This donation allowed the society to purchase the property. They’ve been preserving Golden Valley’s history ever since. They are working to create a museum filled with local artifacts.

In 2025 Spirit of Hope United Methodist Church celebrated a milestone its 150th anniversary. The church held special events including a unique time capsule activity. Church members wrote messages to future generations. These messages will be opened in 20 years. This thoughtful gesture shows the church’s commitment to its past and future. Mayor Shep Harris even attended the anniversary celebration. He acknowledged the strong connection between the church and the city of Golden Valley. A homemade pie auction followed the service a sweet ending to a momentous occasion. The Spirit of Hope United Methodist Church continues to be a cornerstone of the community. A beacon of faith and fellowship for over a century and a half. Its story is a testament to its resilience and its enduring spirit.
