In 1953, a humble chapel emerged, known as the Church of The Immaculate Heart of Mary. It served the Catholics of Serangoon 5th and 6th mile, and the Paya Lebar areas. This was the genesis of the Church of The Immaculate Heart of Mary as we know it today. The Church of The Immaculate Heart of Mary stands as a testament to the growth and unwavering faith of this community. By 1992, the growing congregation necessitated expansion. Wings were added to the church, increasing its capacity. Decades passed, and the parish continued to flourish, exceeding 6,000 members. This growth highlighted the need for a new church building. In 1999, the parish assembly envisioned a new Church of The Immaculate Heart of Mary. They sought to maintain the “kampong spirit,” emphasizing low-rise structures. This decision reflected the community’s desire to preserve its close-knit atmosphere. A Building Committee and a Fund Raising Committee were formed. Their combined efforts led to the construction of the current Church of The Immaculate Heart of Mary. This impressive structure cost SGD 11.3 million. It boasts a single tall structure, the belfry, which stands as a beacon of faith. The Church of The Immaculate Heart of Mary celebrates the Feast Day of the Immaculate Heart of Mary annually. Within its walls, the community gathers for masses. These are held on Saturdays at 6:15 pm, Sundays at 7:00 am, 8:30 am, 11:00 am, and 6:15 pm, and weekdays at 6:15 am and 6:15 pm. A special mass in Burmese is also held every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month at 3:00 pm. The Church of The Immaculate Heart of Mary’s vision is to be a community vibrant in prayer. They strive to be steeped in God’s word, celebrating the sacraments and proclaiming the presence of Jesus. Their mission is to build a spirit-filled servant community, responsive to its spiritual growth needs.
