“Ever wondered how a Russian Orthodox community found its spiritual home in Melbourne? It began long before this magnificent cathedral stood here. Let me tell you the story of The Russian Orthodox Most Holy Mother of God Cathedral.
The Russian presence in Melbourne dates back to the 19th century. Before 1949, Russian Orthodox people attended St Nicholas Church in East Melbourne. In July 1949, a meeting established the Parish of Our Lady’s Protection. The parish initially rented premises. They were in Toorak, then in the city, and later in Fitzroy. In 1954, they purchased the former Anglican Mission Church of St Saviour’s. It stood at 6 Oxford Street, Collingwood. Later, the Melbourne Parish of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad Trust was registered. In the late 1960s, a new church hall was built.
Following World War II, Melbourne saw several waves of Russian migration. People arrived from Germany in the late 1940s. Others came from China in the 1950s and 1960s. There were also migrants from the Soviet Union before 1985. Migration continued after Perestroika to the present day.
Today, The Russian Orthodox Most Holy Mother of God Cathedral serves more than just Russian immigrants. It is a spiritual home for Orthodox Christians from many nations. Reflecting this, services are held in both Church Slavonic and English.
The church and community complex on Albion Street in Brunswick East represents years of dedication. The foundation laying ceremony occurred on November 5, 1989. Regular church services started on September 24, 2006. This day marked the full Consecration. This project was possible thanks to the generosity of parishioners. They donated time and money. Much of the work was done by volunteers on Saturdays.

Grand Duke Andrei Bogolubsky introduced the Feast into Russia in 1160. He admired the Don Cossacks’ devotion. They had witnessed the miraculous vision of the Mother of God over Constantinople in 911 AD. The Grand Duke dedicated his realm to her protection. In 1164, he instructed the Russian Church to include the Feast in the calendar. This led to the construction of many churches dedicated to the Pokrov or Protection.
