Gazing at the Karmelita Kolostor, one might assume it still houses a monastic order. But the echoes within these walls tell a different story. The Karmelita Kolostor, a dominant structure in Budapest’s Castle District, has served numerous purposes over its 300-year history. It began as a Carmelite monastery, a traditional complex with wings surrounding a courtyard and cloisters. Construction took place between 1725 and 1736. However, in 1784, Emperor Joseph II dissolved the Carmelite order, transforming the monastery’s church wing into a theatre. This marked the beginning of the building’s long association with the arts. The church’s tower was demolished, and the space was modified to accommodate theatrical performances. By the late 18th century, a wooden theatre structure occupied the former church space. Later renovations in the 1970s further altered the church, dividing it with reinforced concrete slabs. These slabs were removed during a more recent renovation. The original high-ceilinged space was restored, now suitable for both protocol events and cultural gatherings. The Karmelita Kolostor survived the devastation of World War II. After the war, a new office building was constructed on the site of a previously demolished structure, complementing the historic monastery. The modern interior of the new building provides a functional workspace. Its stone-clad exterior harmonizes with the historical ambiance of Buda Castle. Today, the Karmelita Kolostor serves as the office of the Hungarian Prime Minister. This historically rich building stands as a testament to the changing times and the enduring spirit of Budapest.
