It’s a nearly 400,000-square-foot structure located at the corner of Barton Skyway and South Mopac Expressway, just south of Zilker Park. Purchased for $107.6 million with an additional $13 million allocated for design and renovations, the project represents a substantial investment in Austin’s future. The city opted to finance this project through certificates of obligation, a type of long-term loan that doesn’t require direct voter approval. While the move promises improved working conditions and enhanced emergency response coordination, it hasn’t been without its critics. Concerns have been raised about the chosen location, the overall cost, and the perceived lack of transparency surrounding the project. Despite these concerns, the project is moving forward. After securing approval from the Austin City Council, the building will undergo extensive renovations. These renovations include a focus on energy efficiency, with plans to install solar panels. The design phase alone is estimated to take around six months. Currently, the building has existing tenants. The city is actively working to relocate them to make way for the combined public safety headquarters. The Austin Police HQ, as part of this new complex, signifies a major shift in how the city approaches public safety.
