Envision a flurry of activity around the Water of Leith long ago. Here at Falshaw Bridge, we uncover a tale of connection, community, and civic pride.

Falshaw Bridge stands at the west end of Glenogle Road. It is near the Stockbridge Colonies. This bridge replaced an earlier wooden footbridge. That footbridge stood beside an ancient ford across the Water of Leith.

The original wooden bridge served an important purpose. It connected the Colonies to the main part of Stockbridge. Imagine residents crossing here daily. They journeyed to work, markets, and social gatherings.

The Edinburgh Co-operative Building Company planned the Colonies in 1861. They aimed to provide affordable artisan housing. The location beside the Water of Leith was ideal.

The Falshaw Bridge we see today was opened in 1877. Lord Provost James Falshaw did the honors. The bridge was named after him. This shows his contribution to the community.

David Proudfoot, the engineer, built Falshaw Bridge in 1877. It provided a stronger, more reliable crossing. This was crucial for the growing community.

Look closely and you will see that the Falshaw Bridge was constructed of iron. In 1956, the Falshaw Bridge underwent significant changes. It was renewed with pre-stressed concrete beams. This ensured its structural integrity for years to come.

Notice the activity around the Falshaw Bridge in old photographs. In 1874, many boys stood and hung off the wooden bridge. Three horses and carts made their way along a dirt track. Houses lined the road on both sides.

The Falshaw Bridge remains a vital part of Stockbridge. It connects communities and preserves local history. Take a moment to appreciate the Falshaw Bridge. It is a testament to Edinburgh’s past. It is a bridge to the future.
