Tampines East is a subzone within Tampines. Tampines is a planning area and residential town. It sits in the East Region of Singapore. Tampines covers approximately 20.89 km2. It is the third most populated new town. Only Bedok and Jurong West have more residents. Tampines also serves as the regional centre for the East Region.
The name Tampines comes from the 1900s. A large forest of ironwood trees once stood here. Locals called these trees “tempinis”. Tampines is bordered by several areas. Bedok and Paya Lebar are to the west. Pasir Ris is to the north. Changi is to the east. The Singapore Straits lie to the south.
In the past Tampines was full of forests swamps and sand quarries. Tampines Road is the oldest street. It dates back to 1864. It was then just a cart track. At the turn of the 20th century Tampines transitioned into rubber plantations.
The development boom started in 1978. Neighbourhoods 1 and 2 were prioritised. Construction finished between 1983 and 1987. Neighbourhoods 8 and 9 followed between 1985 and 1989. Neighbourhood 5 completed in 1989. It included the Tampines Town Centre.
New construction methods sped up development. Tampines incorporated more attractive designs. Function met form in public housing. The Town Centre was designed like an hourglass. This created a unique urban space. The Housing and Development Board managed construction. In 1991 they handed over the reins to the Tampines Town Council.
Tampines received the World Habitat Award. The United Nations gave the award in 1992. This recognized the town’s outstanding contribution to human settlement.
As of 2024 Tampines East is the most populous subzone. It has 128250 residents. Tampines is ethnically diverse.
English is the most spoken language. Many residents are bilingual. They often speak English and Chinese.
Tampines is also becoming a cycling town. Dedicated cycling paths were established in 2010. These paths connect residential areas with key amenities.
Tampines East MRT station is an underground station. It is on the Downtown Line. The station opened on October 21 2017. It serves residents nearby schools and Tampines North Park.
