Louis Carolus-Barré was born in Paris on April 9, 1910. He passed away in the same city on July 18, 1993. Louis dedicated his life to the study of history. He focused on the medieval period.

After graduating from the École Nationale des Chartes in 1934, Louis became a member of the École Française de Rome. This was just the start for Louis Barre.

Louis Barre’s career led him to several important libraries. He worked in the manuscript department of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. He also worked at the library of the Institute of France. His journey continued to the General Secretariat of the French School of Rome. He served at the CNRS. Louis also served at the libraries of the Musée du Louvre and the Réunion des Musées Nationaux.

Louis Carolus-Barré significantly contributed to historical scholarship. He published numerous works. These works focused on the history of Picardy and the north of Île-de-France during the Middle Ages. His dedication earned him membership in the Société des Antiquaires de France.

Among his notable publications are “Les plus anciennes chartes en langue française”. This translates to “The oldest charters in French”. Another is “Études et documents sur l’Île-de-France et la Picardie au Moyen Âge”. This means “Studies and documents on Île-de-France and Picardy in the Middle Ages.” These works showcase his deep knowledge.

Louis Carolus-Barré’s personal life also held significance. His son, Charles Barré, is a painter known as Cebarre. The artistic legacy continues.

Louis married Marguerite Rémon in 1937. They had six daughters and one son. Family and scholarship intertwined.
