Seventeen-year-old Jean Jaguin’s name echoes through history. His story is one of courage and sacrifice. It’s a story whispered on the wind here in Créteil. This Rue Jean Jaguin remembers him. It’s a quiet street now. But the stones hold a powerful memory.

Rue Jean Jaguin in Créteil is named for a young man. A young Resistance fighter who gave his life for France. Jean Jaguin wasn’t just a name on a list. He was a vibrant young man from Créteil. He joined the Resistance in 1943. His actions were bold. He and his friend Robert Legeay joined a maquis. They sabotaged the Toulouse-Paris railway line. This was a vital line for the German war effort. Their actions directly disrupted the enemy.

Their bravery didn’t go unnoticed. The Gestapo caught them in Vierzon. They found weapons and explosives. Jean and Robert were imprisoned in Bourges. They were tortured by Pierre Paoli. Paoli was a brutal Gestapo agent. He was known as “the monster”. Under torture Jean and Robert revealed their Resistance contact Paul de Ronne. Paul and his brother Gaby were also arrested and tortured.

A German military tribunal condemned Jean and Robert to death. They were accused of possessing weapons and munitions. On November 18 1943 they were executed at Montifaut near Bourges. They were only seventeen years old. Their deaths sparked outrage in Créteil. But it was too late.

Jean’s sacrifice didn’t go unrecognised. He received the “Mort pour la France” medal. A street in Créteil bears his name. His name is also on memorials in Bourges and Créteil. Rue Jean Jaguin is a powerful testament. It’s a reminder of the bravery of young people. They fought against tyranny. They fought for freedom. They gave everything. We remember them. We remember Jean Jaguin.
