Gladesmore Community School has a rich history. It combines several earlier schools. Crowland Road School opened in 1911. It became Crowland Secondary Modern in 1946. The Crowland School buildings then became part of Markfield County Secondary. Markfield County Secondary was founded in 1956. Drayton School replaced Markfield School. It opened on Gladesmore Road in 1967.
In the 1970s and 1990s Gladesmore struggled. Everything changed when Tony Hartney became Headteacher in 1999. He transformed Gladesmore. The school went from poor to outstanding. Ofsted gave it extremely positive reviews. It gained three consecutive outstanding judgements in all categories. Mr Hartney was appointed a CBE in 2006 for his work. Gladesmore received the Queen’s Award for Service on June 29 2011.
Gladesmore is a coeducational secondary school. It has specialisms. These include Gifted and Talented Mathematics and Computing. Gladesmore also specializes in Applied Learning. The school has over 1270 pupils. They come from diverse ethnic linguistic and religious backgrounds. This creates a tremendously rich culture.
The school embraces its community’s diversity. It promotes improvements. Gladesmore’s ethos is positive friendly and uplifting. Students and staff relate well to each other. They enjoy a family atmosphere.
Gladesmore pupils founded the Value Life campaign in 2003. It teaches students how to stay safe. It helps them make the most of their lives. This campaign tackles gun and knife crime. It evolved into large events. These events included a carnival a march a music video and a short film. Value Life was supported by Queen Elizabeth II Boris Johnson and David Cameron. The campaign won the Philip Lawrence Award in 2008.
In 2011 Gladesmore founded the Everybody Dreams campaign. This aimed to improve Tottenham’s reputation. This was after the 2011 England Riots. The campaign included a song performed by pupils. Leona Lewis Donald Trump and others supported it. The song reached number 33 in the iTunes chart.
Pupils can apply to become prefects in year 10. In year 11 a head boy and head girl are appointed. There is also a deputy for each. Students may vote for a boy and a girl. These students become part of the School Council.
Gladesmore’s curriculum is broad and balanced. It focuses on academic excellence. It provides opportunities for pupils to discover their talents. Pupil achievement is consistently strong.
