“The execution grounds of Hananohachi… did you know they were once located near here?” I ask, watching your faces for a flicker of recognition. Right in front of us stands the Kawaramachi Jizoson, a small, unassuming Buddhist temple. Don’t let its modesty fool you. This place holds centuries of Hiroshima’s history, whispering tales of resilience and rebirth. The temple’s origins date back to 1717. A man named Idoku Sosaemon, previously residing in Naka-Shimmachi’s Kawaramachi, relocated here. His cherished possessions included a statue of Jizo, a Buddhist guardian deity. Upon his move, the villagers constructed a humble hall to house this statue. Over time, the deity gained a reputation for granting wishes and became known as the protector from fire. The Kawaramachi Jizoson, much like the city itself, faced the devastating wrath of the atomic bomb. Yet, amidst the ashes, three stone Buddhist statues miraculously survived. This poignant reminder of resilience stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of this place. The temple was rebuilt in the aftermath, a beacon of hope in a city grappling with unimaginable loss. Today, the Kawaramachi Jizoson stands as a place of remembrance, a quiet sanctuary in the heart of Hiroshima.
