Three steps lead up to it. A simple yet powerful monument. This is the Otford War Memorial. It stands as a testament to the sacrifices made during the First and Second World Wars.

The Otford War Memorial is more than just stone. It is a poignant reminder of the 37 men from Otford who lost their lives in World War I and the 7 who died in World War II. Their names are etched onto bronze panels. These names represent families. They represent broken hearts and dreams deferred.

The memorial itself is a Latin cross. A sword of sacrifice adorns its west face. The Portland stone stands firm. It has endured the passage of time. The inscription reads “The Glorious Dead Fallen in the Cause of the Free”. These words resonate with a power that transcends generations.

On October 30 1920 Colonel Lord Mildmay of Flete unveiled the memorial for the First World War. A rededication ceremony followed on February 20 1927. Mr I H Knight the Parish Council Chairman and Mr H T Underwood oversaw the fixing of the bronze tablets. Two separate services. Two distinct acts of remembrance. One unified memorial.

Today the Otford War Memorial stands in good condition. The names remain legible. Each one a whispered story of courage and loss. The memorial stands on the village green near St Bartholomew’s Church. It serves as a constant reminder of those who gave their all. A symbol of hope and remembrance for the community.

Remember their sacrifice. Remember the names. Remember Otford’s War Memorial. Let their memory live on. Let their legacy inspire. Let us never forget the price of freedom.
