Did you know that the White Elster played a role in a pivotal moment of history? Right here before us flows the White Elster a 257-kilometer-long river. It’s a significant waterway in central Europe. Its source is in the Czech Republic near Hazlov. From there it flows into eastern Germany carving a deep and picturesque valley through the Vogtland.
The White Elster’s historical significance is immense. It’s a tributary of the Saale River. The White Elster flows through many German cities. These include Plauen Greiz Gera Zeitz Pegau and finally Leipzig. It ultimately joins the Saale in Halle.
The river’s name despite its resemblance to the German word for magpie has a different origin. It stems from an Indo-European root meaning flow and a Germanic ending. The White Elster is famously distinguished from the Black Elster. This other river flows into the Elbe. The contrasting names help to differentiate them.
A dramatic event in history involved the White Elster. During the retreat from the Battle of Leipzig in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars the river proved disastrous for the French troops. Marshal of France Jozef Poniatowski tragically drowned in its waters on October 19 1813. This somber event forever links the White Elster to a significant historical moment.
The White Elster’s path is not simply linear. In Leipzig it splits into two main branches. The northern one retains the name White Elster. The southern branch is the canalized Neue Luppe. These reunite further downstream.
