Beneath the rugged Serra de na Burguesa lies a hidden world. It is a world of shadows and stone called Avenc des Dragons.

Avenc des Dragons translates to the “Dragon’s Sinkhole.” It is a fitting name for this dramatic entrance.

We’re standing near Calvià. Look around at the coma de s’Arc. This is near coll des Pastors.

Imagine dragons guarding this entrance. They are protecting secrets held for centuries.

Let’s journey back in time. Imagine early explorers stumbling upon this opening. What thoughts raced through their minds? Did they fear a dragon’s lair? Or did curiosity beckon them into the unknown?

Avenc des Dragons is more than just a hole in the ground. It is a vertical fracture. It plunges eleven meters into the earth. The opening is small. It measures about two meters by one meter.

Think about descending into this darkness. A rope and a brave heart are your only companions.

Speleologists call this a speleothem paradise.

Inside Avenc des Dragons, you’ll find nature’s artistry on full display. Banderolas or flag-like formations adorn the walls. Imagine delicate draperies of stone. They cascade down the rock face.

Arborescent formations resemble frozen trees. Their branches reach out in silent beauty. Coladas parietales create a flowing effect. It is like frozen waterfalls of stone.

The cave’s base slopes steeply. It narrows to the east. Further exploration becomes impossible.

Consider the challenges of mapping this cave. The tight spaces and the darkness require specialized skills.

Avenc des Dragons is a reminder of the hidden wonders. These wonders lie beneath our feet. It is a testament to the power of water and time. They sculpt the earth’s hidden spaces.

To reach this hidden gem, we’d follow a path. It starts near the Mirador Ca na Burguesa parking area.

From Palma, we would take the Ma-20 highway. We would head towards Andratx. Then we would exit at Gènova, Ma-1045. At the entrance of the town, we would take the first right. We would follow signs to Mirador Ca na Burguesa.

A short hike would lead us to the Avenc des Dragons. The path offers stunning views of Palma Bay.

The coordinates pinpoint its location. WGS84 31S 0463355 / 4379550 at 444 meters. European 1950 coordinates are 0463448 / 4379749 at 444 meters.

Remember the coordinates and location if you decide to find it again.

The hike takes about 40 minutes. It covers about two kilometers on a track. Another 170 meters are on a path to the sinkhole.

Avenc des Dragons is not for the faint of heart. It is for those who seek adventure and natural beauty. It is a place where dragons might still slumber. Or, perhaps it is a place where only the earth’s artistry reigns.
