Imagine the history etched into these very bricks of Orchards Academy. This isn’t just a school. It’s a landmark that has evolved with the town of Swanley.

Orchards Academy stands on St Mary’s Road. It welcomes students aged 11 to 18. But before it was Orchards Academy it was Swanley Comprehensive School. Then it became Swanley Technology College.

In November 2010 a transformation occurred. The school officially became Orchards Academy. It joined the Kemnal Academies Trust. This trust oversees many schools across England. Before this change Kent County Council administered the school. Now Orchards Academy coordinates admissions with the council.

The name Orchards Academy wasn’t chosen at random. It reflects Swanley’s rich past. This area was once known for its markets and flower farms. The name pays homage to that heritage.

Orchards Academy offers a variety of courses. Students can study for GCSEs. They can also take BTECs and City and Guilds courses. The school once had a sixth form. Unfortunately, it closed in September 2021.

The school is led by Headteacher Andy Lazenby. He works with a senior leadership team. A board of directors provides oversight.

Orchards Academy has seen many students walk its halls. Some have achieved notable success. Janice Hadlow once controlled BBC 2 and is now an author. Crispian St Peters found fame as a singer and guitarist. Mark Steel became a columnist and comedian. Mike Stock is a respected songwriter and record producer. Ruben Loftus-Cheek plays football for AC Milan and England.

The school has a capacity for 828 pupils. Currently around 551 students attend Orchards Academy. The school is non-selective. It welcomes a mix of students.

Financially Orchards Academy is in excellent shape. The school budget is in surplus. Admissions are also strong with a high offer rate. There is no compulsory entrance exam.

However like any institution Orchards Academy faces challenges. Progress scores are below average. Destinations for further education or training are also below average. Attendance rates are poor.

Orchards Academy provides support for students with special educational needs. It offers provision for Autistic Spectrum Disorder. There is resourced provision with a limited number of places.

Orchards Academy stands as a testament to education and adaptation. It continues to shape young minds in Swanley. From its origins as Swanley Comprehensive to its current form, Orchards Academy has remained a pillar of the community.
