“A church with two front doors?” a child’s voice might question, baffled by the sight of Åbyhøj Kirke. The Åbyhøj Kirke indeed plays a curious trick of architecture. Designed by Harald Lønborg-Jensen and inaugurated in 1945, it features a walled-off entrance on the north wall, directly beside the tower. This unusual feature harks back to an older tradition where churches had separate entrances for men and women, usually north and south respectively. Although the original Åbyhøj Kirke, demolished much earlier, also had this two-door design, it’s fascinating that Lønborg-Jensen chose to echo this vanished practice. Inside, the church embraces a minimalist palette. The altar, facing north, is crafted from grey and yellow travertine and adorned with only a gilded crucifix. Red brick paves the floor, and the overall ambiance is one of understated reverence. The church stands as a testament to both historical echoes and modern design sensibilities.
