Have you ever traced the gentle flow of a hidden stream? Welcome to the Brunnbach a small river in Munich’s Bogenhausen district. This unassuming waterway holds a fascinating history. For centuries the Brunnbach wasn’t just a pretty stream. It powered mills. From the 10th to the 19th century four mills thrived on its waters in Grϋntal and St Emmeram. Imagine the rhythmic churning of millstones the constant flow of water providing energy for a bygone era. The Brunnbach wasn’t simply functional though. Its water was exceptionally pure. In the 17th century Brunnthal near its source became a renowned spa. People believed the water held curative powers. The spa continued operating until 1914. Even today the Brunnbach’s springs maintain drinking water quality. The river’s course has changed. Its original source lay near Bad Brunnthal. When the Herzogpark was developed parts of the Brunnbach were filled in. A renaturation effort in the 1990s aimed to restore the stream’s natural flow. A section between Abacostrasse and Opitzstrasse found a new bed in a municipal green area. The Brunnbach even inspired art. Thomas Mann used it as a model for the river in his novella A Man and His Dog. Today as you look upon the Brunnbach you see more than just water. You see a history of industry healing and literary inspiration. A small stream with a surprisingly large story. A story waiting to be discovered.
