Have you ever wondered what secrets lie beneath the ancient stones of a church? Sankt Petri in Bremen is a church that has stood for over 1200 years. It is a testament to the enduring faith of the people of Bremen. But nestled within this historic building are also stories of destruction, rebirth, and even the strange preservation of human remains. The first church on this site was a humble wooden structure built in 789 by the Saxon bishop Willehad. It was destroyed by the Saxons just three years later. However, it was rebuilt in 805. But the church was not immune to fire and destruction. In 1041, a devastating fire destroyed the church, its library, and several houses. The fire was set by a scorned relative of an Archbishop, who was enraged that he was not chosen for a certain position in the church. But after this tragedy, the church was rebuilt in its present location. The main structure of the church that we see today was built in the 11th century. It is an impressive three-nave basilica with two towers that stand over 90 meters tall. Even on a clear day, you may notice that some of the stone on the western façade has a beautiful patina. Some of the stones were taken from old city walls for the construction of the church, and the weather has transformed these stones over time. This church has borne witness to the passage of time, and it continues to stand as a symbol of faith and resilience. It is a true gem of Bremen, and its stories are waiting to be discovered.
