Across the Seine stands the majestic Pont de Bir-Hakeim. It’s more than just a bridge. It’s a Parisian icon a testament to engineering and a poignant tribute to history.

Built between 1903 and 1905 the bridge replaced an older structure from 1878. It’s a two-level marvel. Cars and pedestrians use the lower level. Above them the Metro line 6 whizzes along its elevated tracks. Art Deco streetlights line the metal colonnades supporting the railway viaduct. Except where it crosses the Île aux Cygnes.

The bridge is adorned with magnificent iron sculptures and statues. Four high-relief statues grace the central arch. Jules-Felix Coutan sculpted Science and Labor on the upstream side. Jean Antoine Injalbert created Electricity and Commerce on the downstream side.

Near the Île aux Cygnes stands La France Renaissante. This equestrian statue sculpted by Holger Wederkinch in 1930 is a gift from the Danish community. It was inaugurated in its current location in 1958. From here the Eiffel Tower provides a breathtaking view.

Originally named Pont de Passy the bridge was renamed in 1948. This commemorated the Battle of Bir-Hakeim in 1942. There Free French forces bravely fought the German Africa Korps. The bridge now serves as a lasting memorial to their heroism.

Pedestrians can easily access the Île aux Cygnes from the bridge. At the island’s downstream end stands a smaller replica of the Statue of Liberty. This Parisian version was created by Bartholdi the same sculptor who crafted the original New York landmark.

In 1986 the French authorities designated the Pont de Bir-Hakeim as a historic monument. Its unique design its historical significance and its stunning views make it a true Parisian gem. Take the Metro line 6 between Bir-Hakeim and Passy stations. Enjoy the unforgettable panorama from this extraordinary bridge.
