A hippo in Hutto? Absolutely! The Hutto Plaque commemorates the town’s quirky mascot and unusual history. This plaque, right here before us, tells a tale as tall as a, well, a hippo. Hutto, Texas, a town established in 1876, boasts a unique mascot: the hippopotamus. The Hutto Plaque stands as a testament to this unusual choice. In 1915, a circus train paused in Hutto. The train needed to take on passengers, mail, water, and fuel. During this stop, the circus workers also tended to their animals. Chaos erupted when a hippopotamus escaped its railcar and lumbered towards Cottonwood Creek. The frantic circus workers, joined by amused locals, tried to coax the hippo from its muddy haven. Legend says the depot agent, Hal Farley Jr., sent a telegraph to nearby towns: “STOP TRAINS, HIPPO LOOSE IN HUTTO.” Finally, the hippo was wrangled back onto the train. This unusual event cemented the hippo’s place in Hutto’s history. Soon after, the Hutto School adopted the hippo as its mascot. By 1923, the hippo graced Hutto High School graduation announcements. The Hutto Plaque reminds us of this whimsical origin story. While other tales explain the mascot’s origin, the escaped hippo remains the most popular. This plaque, a symbol of Hutto’s unique identity, reminds us that sometimes, truth is stranger than fiction. Hutto and “Hippo” are now synonymous. If you mention Hutto, people often respond, “Oh, the hippos!” The Hutto Plaque stands not just as a marker of a historical event, but as a celebration of a town’s unique spirit. Hutto is “hippo proud”, and this plaque ensures this quirky piece of history is never forgotten.
