Hidden in plain sight on the bustling Rue de Varenne stands the Château de Villeroy. It’s not a typical château with sprawling gardens and fairytale turrets. This château whispers secrets of power, passion, and pianos. The Château de Villeroy, now the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food, began its life in the early 18th century. A Swiss banker, Antoine Hogguer de Saint-Gall, Baron de Presles, built it for his mistress, the captivating actress Charlotte Desmares. Imagine their clandestine meetings within these walls. The architect, François Debias-Aubry, also designed a “folie,” a pleasure pavilion, for the couple in Châtillon. Unfortunately, the baron’s fortune crumbled, and the lovers fled Paris in 1726. The Château de Villeroy then housed ambassadors from Holland and England. In 1735, François-Louis de Neufville de Villeroy acquired the property, giving the château its current name. He commissioned expansions, including a magnificent circular salon overlooking the gardens. Years later, his nephew, Gabriel Louis, hosted lavish parties and even built a small theater within the château. The Château de Villeroy saw a revolving door of owners. It briefly housed the Érard piano manufactory in 1780. It became state property during the French Revolution, then returned to the Comte de Tessé, only to be reclaimed by the military in 1805. The Château de Villeroy then served as a military academy, headquarters for public works, and the residence of various government ministers. Finally, in 1881, under President Jules Grévy, it became the official home of the Ministry of Agriculture. The château has been significantly altered and expanded over the centuries. The original courtyard separating the main building from the street-facing service wing was filled in, creating a unified structure. A second circular salon was added to mirror the existing one, giving the façade a balanced elegance. Inside, remnants of its opulent past remain. Tapestries, Empire-style furniture, and even a 17th-century “tonneau,” a large oak barrel, adorn the ministerial offices. The grand staircase, the “escalier d’honneur,” features an iron railing with interwoven “L”s, a subtle tribute to Louis XIV. The Château de Villeroy stands as a silent witness to centuries of French history, from romantic intrigues to political power plays, a hidden gem in the heart of Paris.
