Witnessing the grandeur of Williams Memorial Temple Church is truly awe-inspiring. This isn’t just any church. It’s a place steeped in history and community. Williams Memorial Temple Church a beacon of faith boasts a rich heritage. It began humbly in 1926 as St. Matthews C.M.E. Church. Meetings were initially held in a home. A small group seeking familiar religious traditions founded the church.

They rented a building on Moon Street. They worshipped there for five years. Then in 1930 they bought land on Leonard and Hay Streets. They built a simple structure. Locals nicknamed it “The Old Field Church”. The mortgage was paid off around 1938. The congregation grew. They needed a larger building.

In 1944 a new church was erected under Rev H.C Wright. Pews were basic. Heating was a pot-bellied stove. There were no restrooms. Members used the parsonage nearby. A bell in the steeple signaled services. This bell now sits on the current church lawn.

Further changes happened under Rev G.F Judd. New pews carpet and a furnace were added. In 1960 under Rev W.N Williams the parsonage was demolished. An educational building was built. It included a kitchen and dining facilities. A fire hampered construction. The building was completed. The sanctuary was expanded and bricked.

In 1992 another transformation occurred. The old sanctuary was removed. A new 300-seat sanctuary and an administrative wing were constructed. The church focused on community service. Many pastors served. Each contributed to the congregation’s growth. In 1970 the name changed to Williams Memorial C.M.E. Church. It honored Rev W.N Williams’ legacy.

Rev Robert J Williams Jr led the church from 1977. He emphasized love and growth. Membership soared to over 1000. A new vision emerged. A new cathedral was planned. In 1998 22 acres were purchased. Construction finished in 2004. The cathedral features a large sanctuary. It has modern audio-visual equipment. It houses classrooms a fellowship hall and more.

The church continues to grow. It purchased the Old Brentwood elementary school. It plans to make it a community center. This will include a dance studio a computer lab and more. Further expansion is planned. Williams Memorial Temple Church truly stands as a testament to faith community and perseverance. It’s a place where history and hope intertwine. Its impact on its community is remarkable.
