Slipping through time, imagine Seattle in 1946. The West Howe Street Bridge is new, a sleek span of concrete and steel. It arches gracefully over a deep ravine, connecting West Howe Street at the north end of Magnolia Park. The West Howe Street Bridge wasn’t designed with today’s earthquake knowledge in mind. Built before modern seismic codes, it needed some help to withstand the tremors that occasionally shake Seattle. Fast forward to the 21st century. The West Howe Street Bridge is a beloved landmark, but it’s showing its age. Thanks to the Move Seattle Levy, a seismic retrofit program was launched, and the West Howe Street Bridge was one of the lucky recipients. This wasn’t just a simple paint job. The project was a major undertaking to bring the bridge up to modern earthquake standards. Steel reinforcement was added to bolster the existing structure. Think steel plates bracing the columns and crossbeams, like a sturdy exoskeleton. New expansion joints and bearings were installed. These act like shock absorbers, allowing the bridge to flex and move during a quake rather than crack under pressure. Massive concrete catcher blocks were added underneath, designed to prevent the bridge from sliding off its supports in a major earthquake. Even the surrounding landscaping got a refresh after the construction was finished. The West Howe Street Bridge stands today as a testament to Seattle’s commitment to safety and preservation. It’s a bridge to the future, fortified against the unpredictable forces of nature, ready to serve generations to come.
