Let’s talk a bit about the history of Casa Veronica. The town of Verónica was founded in 1915. Martín Tornquist donated the land. He named the town after his wife, Verónica Bernal. A railroad from La Plata arrived in 1914. A station was built. The Punta Indio Naval Air Base was established in 1925. It is about 6 kilometers from the town center. The base became a pillar for the town’s development.
Verónica has always been diverse. Spanish and Italian people settled here. Many immigrants came from Germany. People also arrived from Central and Eastern Europe. These included Polish, Ukrainian and Croatian immigrants. The German Boarding School still serves German schools. It welcomes students from all over the country. Interestingly, Verónica stood in for a Uruguayan town. This was for the American film The City of Your Final Destination.
The main economic activities near Casa Veronica relate to farming. These activities include agriculture, cattle and bird raising. Tourism has recently started to grow. This growth is around the old estancias in the area.
There are two major sports clubs in Verónica. Club Social y Deportivo Verónica was established in 1919. Club Social y Deportivo Juventud Unida was established in 1951. They compete in regional football tournaments. From 1991 to 2001, a Turismo Carretera race was held at the Naval Base six times.
The train link is not operational anymore. The train station building is still used by cultural associations. A regular bus service runs between Verónica and La Plata. Mini-buses also connect to La Plata and Buenos Aires. Local transport connects Verónica with Punta Indio and Pipinas.
Verónica has a moderate climate. The average temperature is about 16 degrees Celsius. Rainfall is fairly consistent throughout the year.
