Izzet Demirhan a 60-year-old hamal told Anadolu Agency his story. He worked as a hamal for ten years. He carries 50 to 60 kilograms daily. His earnings range from 50 to 100 Turkish Lira. The biggest struggle he faces is the lack of insurance. He worries about his health. Years of carrying heavy loads have taken their toll. He suffers from knee and back pain. He doesn’t want his children to share his fate. He wants them to get an education to have a proper profession.
Faik Taşdemir another hamal shared a similar story. He came to Istanbul from Adıyaman. He worked as a hamal for 30 years. He regrets his choice of profession. He wants his children to avoid the hardships he faced. He carries up to 100 kilograms despite weighing only 67 kilograms himself. Like many hamals he suffers from health problems. His back neck and knees constantly ache.
