Sculpted from granite marble and bronze the Chafariz das Saracuras stands before you. This isn’t just any fountain. It’s a testament to Rio’s rich history.

Originally crafted in 1795 by the renowned Mestre Valentim the Chafariz began its life within the Convento da Ajuda. The nuns commissioned it to honor the Viceroy Conde de Resende. He had brought running water to their convent a remarkable feat at the time.

The convent was later demolished. In 1911 Cardinal Arcoverde gifted the Chafariz to the city. It found a new home in Praça General Osório. Its journey wasn’t without incident. Bronze saracura sculptures adorning the base were stolen multiple times. Each time they were painstakingly replaced. Repairs also restored the fountain’s flow of water.

Examine the Chafariz closely. Note its circular platform. Four tanks cascade into one another. Staircases wind between them. At the center a tall bowl sits. A narrow pyramid rises from it crowned with an iron cross. A marble plaque records its creation and dedication to the Conde de Resende. Imagine the water flowing creating a soothing melody.

The Chafariz das Saracuras is more than just a pretty sight. It’s a window into Rio’s past. It represents the artistry of Mestre Valentim. It symbolizes the city’s evolution. Its resilience mirrors Rio itself. The Chafariz endures a beautiful tribute to history perseverance and the city’s enduring spirit.
