Women played a crucial role at IPAN. The Damas da Assistência à Infância was formed in 1906. It consisted of upper-class women. They sewed clothes for poor children and prepared medical supplies. The Damas also organized events and collected donations.
IPAN extended its reach through the Departamento da Criança no Brasil. Created in 1919, it gathered information on childcare across the country. IPAN also created the Museu da Infância. It was a public display of the history of children.
