Here stands what remains of the Rue des Bourguignons a name that echoes through Parisian history. It is not a grand boulevard lined with monuments. It is a memory etched into the city’s fabric.

The story of the Rue des Bourguignons is interwoven with the Boulevard Port-Royal. Imagine Paris in 1858. The Rue des Bourguignons still existed then. The writer Charles Lefeuve noted its presence in his Histoire de Paris rue par rue maison par maison.

But time and progress are relentless. The creation of the Boulevard Port-Royal meant the disappearance of several streets. The Rue des Bourguignons was among those swallowed by the new boulevard. It vanished almost entirely.

Picture a small lane leading to the ancient monastery of Port-Royal. The Rue des Bourguignons served as a boundary. This monastery was linked to the Jansenists. It was also the site of the Maison de Santé a clinic. The location was known for the Convulsionnaires religious extremists.

Imagine a street of modest working-class homes. In 1714 the Rue des Bourguignons had 49 buildings most were small. Yet they enjoyed the luxury of seven lanterns illuminating the night.

Interestingly the Hôtel de la Santé stood at number 35 on the Rue des Bourguignons. This building led to Port-Royal. Its wooden banisters hinted at a time before the Jansenist conflicts. It housed a family of gardeners for a century before becoming a boarding house.

The street had a dark chapter in its past. In 1688 a sacrilege occurred. Thieves stole a ciborium from the Saint-Martin church. They discarded the Hosts on the Rue des Bourguignons. To atone for this act a cross was erected. An annual procession commemorated this event.

Today the Rue des Bourguignons is mostly lost. Its spirit survives in historical records. As you walk along Boulevard Port-Royal remember the little street it replaced. Think about the people who lived worked and worshipped here. The Rue des Bourguignons is a reminder that even lost streets have stories to tell.
