Seventy-two and a half meters that is the maximum elevation of the Basílica Nuestra Señora de Lourdes. It is a soaring testament to faith. Here before us stands more than just a church. It stands as a sanctuary. It is located in Santos Lugares in Buenos Aires Argentina. The Basílica Nuestra Señora de Lourdes design is inspired by the Sanctuary of Lourdes in France. It offers a unique blend of architectural styles and profound religious significance.

The story of this basilica begins in 1921. A statue of the Virgin of Lourdes arrived from Lyon France. It weighed 400 kg. It was made of cast iron. This statue marked the start of the church’s construction. Father Antonio Silbermann oversaw the project. The first stone was blessed on October 11 1922. Bishop Francisco Alberti officiated the ceremony. Dr Luis Cantilo the Governor of Buenos Aires Province attended.

Construction lasted about 45 years. The final touches were completed in 1967. A bookstore opened at the basilica’s entrance in 1970. In 1972 the central tower reached its final height. A cross was placed atop the building.

The Basílica Nuestra Señora de Lourdes consists of two temples. One sits above the other. Architect Etienne Quichet designed the basilica. He was a French architect living in Argentina. The lower temple features a romantic style. The upper temple showcases a neogothic design.

Each year on February 11 thousands of people visit the Basílica Nuestra Señora de Lourdes. They celebrate the Feast of the Virgin of Lourdes. The streets of Santos Lugares become pedestrian walkways. Blessings processions and celebrations fill the day. Devotees renew their faith. The Iglesia de Lourdes becomes one of Argentina’s most visited churches.

The festivities include many masses. These masses take place in the lower temple the upper temple and the grotto. Each service focuses on different intentions.

In 2023 Argentinian singer Jairo performed at the grotto. The concert lasted one hour and 40 minutes. Over 3000 people attended.

The Basílica Nuestra Señora de Lourdes is more than a building. It is a vibrant center of faith. It is a place of pilgrimage and celebration. Its history architecture and cultural events make it a unique treasure.
