Was Congregation Mishne Ugmoro always at this location here on North California Avenue? No. Congregation Mishne Ugmoro has a fascinating history, full of relocations. This journey reflects the evolving Jewish community in Chicago. The congregation itself was founded much earlier, in 1890. Meites’ “History of the Jews of Chicago,” published in 1924, tells us that Congregation Mishne Ugmoro, originally located elsewhere in the city, moved to 29 O’Brien in 1895. This address, after a citywide renumbering in 1909, became 636 O’Brien. Imagine the hustle and bustle of a growing city as horse-drawn carriages traversed these very streets. The congregation’s growth continued, leading to the establishment of a branch at 1321 S. Spaulding by 1923. Congregation Mishne Ugmoro eventually moved to a new building at Douglas and Christiana in the late 1920s. However, their stay there wouldn’t last forever. In 1955, the congregation relocated once more, this time to its present location on North California Avenue. As you stand here today, you’re witnessing a chapter in the ongoing story of Congregation Mishne Ugmoro, a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community.
