Amidst the bustling urban landscape of Fulham, stands the Lady Margaret School. A beacon of knowledge and empowerment for young women. Lady Margaret School has a fascinating past. It’s intertwined with royalty, educational reform, and the enduring spirit of strong women. Lady Margaret School traces its roots back to Whitelands College School in 1842. This institution was initially a teacher training college for women. In 1917, Whitelands School faced closure. Enid Moberly Bell, along with her dedicated staff, rallied to save the students. Their efforts led to the founding of Lady Margaret School in September 1917. Named after Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of King Henry VII, the school adopted her legacy of supporting education. Interestingly, Lady Margaret Beaufort was also the founder of St. John’s and Christ’s Colleges in Cambridge. Starting in Belfield House on Parsons Green, Lady Margaret School expanded to include Elm House in 1937. Thanks to the generosity of Anne Lupton, Elm House was renamed Lupton House. Lady Margaret School started as a fee-paying institution. With the 1944 Butler Act, which introduced free secondary education in the UK, the school adapted. The kindergarten and junior school were phased out. Lady Margaret School transitioned into a grammar school. Later, in 1977, it became a comprehensive school. The school celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2017. Princess Alexandra, who had opened the new assembly hall in 1965, served as the centenary’s patron. She attended a special service at Westminster Abbey to mark the occasion. Today, Lady Margaret School stands as a Church of England academy. It provides a nurturing environment for over 700 girls aged 11 to 18. The school is known for its strong academics. It received “outstanding” ratings from Ofsted. The school even expanded its sixth form with the addition of the Olivier Centre in 2010. Lady Margaret School’s story is one of resilience, adaptation, and unwavering commitment to girls’ education.
