Originally a private garden, Parque Eduardo Guinle now welcomes everyone. This vibrant park in Laranjeiras offers a tranquil escape. Parque Eduardo Guinle started as the gardens of Eduardo Guinle’s palace in the 1920s. French landscape designer Gérarad Cochet created the initial design. Later, Roberto Burle Marx added his touch. The park covers approximately 24,750 square meters. You can access it from Gago Coutinho Street. Parque Eduardo Guinle isn’t just about plants and pathways. It boasts a fascinating architectural history too. Architect Lucio Costa designed a set of residential buildings within the park between 1948 and 1954. His modern designs, with a distinct Brazilian flair, seamlessly blend with the natural surroundings. Costa originally envisioned six buildings radiating around the park. Only three were built. Later, the MMM Roberto office building joined the ensemble. The original Guinle mansion now serves as the residence of the Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro. This means the park enjoys round-the-clock security. Visitors can relax and enjoy the beautiful greenery in relative safety. Nestled in a small valley at the foot of Nova Cintra hill, Parque Eduardo Guinle resembles an amphitheater. A stream and artificial lakes are surrounded by gently sloping hillsides. The park’s entrance features a striking granite portico. This supports a cast iron gate flanked by two winged lion statues. The park has recently been renovated. Now, it offers a children’s play area with swings and seesaws. It also has fitness equipment including parallel bars, fixed bars, and an abdominal board. While you can’t park or barbecue here, there’s plenty to enjoy. The design influences of Lucio Costa and Burle Marx give Parque Eduardo Guinle a striking resemblance to the superblocks of Brasília’s Pilot Plan. This makes it a unique destination that combines natural beauty, architectural significance, and a touch of historical intrigue.
